HOW ARE MICHAEL SAVAGE’S COMMENTS NOT HATE SPEECH?

According to the San Jose Mercury news, on July 5th, radio host Michael Weiner, who goes by the name Michael Savage, when referring to students who were fasting in support of Congress passing the DREAM Amendment (see explanation below) said the following: “let them fast until they starve to death, then that solves the problem,” followed by “then we won’t have a problem about giving them green cards because they’re illegal aliens.”

This comment has caused outrage at rallies and many students and organizations are calling for Weiner’s resignation. Please see the link to the article to the left.

What is the DREAM Amendment? Below is AILA’s synopsis, call your Senators and ask that they vote YES!

Durbin-Hagel-Lugar DREAM Amendment to the Defense Authorization (H.R. 1585):

  • Each year, thousands of immigrants who graduate from high school and who have grown up in the United States are unable to pursue their dreams of going to college because they lack legal immigration status.
  • This amendment would provide deserving undocumented immigrant students with an opportunity to apply for legal status and to continue their education.
  • Children who were not old enough to make their own decisions when entering the United States should not be held responsible for their parents’ actions. They should be given an opportunity to go earn legal status and contribute to this country.
  • Providing these children with the opportunity to come out of the shadows and maximize their potential will strengthen the nation’s economic foundation and remedy a clear injustice in our immigration system.
