GOVERNMENT-ISSUED ID CARD FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED

According to a Washington Post article, “starting Tuesday, New Haven will offer illegal immigrants municipal identification cards that allow access to city services such as libraries and a chance to open bank accounts.”

The federal government failed to do its job when it was unable to come to agreement on comprehensive immigration reform to fix this nation’s broken system. States and municipalities are enacting their own laws which will lead to a hodgepodge of rules and confusion throughout the country for the undocumented and law enforcement. Many of these laws are restrictive and punitive and others, such as New Haven’s, are more liberal and humane.
