THREE STATES PULL OUT OF ICE’S “SECURE COMMUNITIES” IMMIGRATION PROGRAM

According to an article on nytimes.com:  “Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts has decided the state will not participate in a fingerprint-sharing program that is central to the Obama administration’s immigration enforcement strategy, dealing a new political blow to a program that has met rising resistance nationwide.”

New York and Illinois are the other states whose governors have pulled out of the program.  Immigration continues to be a divisive, hot button issue for many.  If history is any indication, the upcoming election as well as the myriad of state immigration laws may bring attention to the issue.  Politics frequently get in the way of good policies so we will have to wait and see what the prospects for Comprehensive Immigration Reform will be in the coming year.
