652 ICE EMPLOYER I-9 AUDIT NOTICES SERVED TODAY

According to a US ICE News Release:  “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is launching a bold, new audit initiative today by issuing Notices of Inspection (NOIs) to 652 businesses nationwide – which is more than ICE issued throughout all of last fiscal year. The notices alert business owners that ICE will be inspecting their hiring records to determine whether or not they are complying with employment eligibility verification laws and regulations.”

If your company receives a Notice of Inspection or if you would like to ensure that you are in compliance with the I-9 regulations, contact an experienced immigration lawyer.  Like most immigration matters, I-9 compliance seems deceptively easy but there are pitfalls to avoid and violations, even if technical in nature, could prove very costly.

This initiative seems is in line with the Obama administration’s new focus on employers as opposed to undocumented aliens that were targeted under the Bush administration.
